Project News >> from page 4 The arced wings of the bed tower stem from the wedge-shaped patient rooms — broader at the doorway to accommodate a safer, wider opening and toilet. When arrayed, the arced "wings" or "pods" allow for maximum efficiency and flexibility. Each pod of 16 beds is arrayed to provide optimum visibility between patient rooms, nursing teams and the centralized control station. Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital opens Cancer Treatment Centers of America opens in Georgia Cancer Treatment Centers of America has opened its fifth regional destination hospital, CTCA at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, in Newnan, Ga., just south of Atlanta. Designed by Dewberry, the 226,000-square-foot, all-digital facility is the newest home of Patient Empowered Care, a care model that combines state-of-the-art clinical treatments and technology and supportive therapies. Construction was provided by the team of Okland Construction and BatsonCook Construction. Among the new hospital's features are 25 private inpatient treatment rooms, surgical suites, specialized treatment suites for endoscopy and bronchoscopy, state-of-the-art radiation and infusion therapy departments, rehabilitation and physical therapy, concierge services, a dining room with organic offerings, a chapel and onsite guest accommodations. Three years after breaking ground, the new Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital was dedicated at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Designed by Payette, the 250,000-square-foot, five-story facility allows the institution to Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center on the Banner Gateway campus in Gilbert, Ariz. broke ground on an 111,000-square-foot expansion of its outpatient cancer facility, offering a new service and additional equipment and treatment areas to meet the needs of its rapidly growing patient population. The project will add three linear accelerators, 30 exam rooms and 13 infusion bays, as well as shell space for future expansion needs. The newly added area will open in spring 2014. Project architects are HKS, Inc., and the general contractor is DPR Construction. Gresham, Smith and Partners has completed two emergency department projects in the eastern United States. The firm provided architecture, interior design and planning services for a new 44,000-squarefoot outpatient care center for Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Va., and a new 33,000-square-foot emergency department at the Wesley Long Hospital campus of Cone Health in Greensboro, N.C. The facilities will improve the quality of emergency healthcare provided to patients. A seven-level parking garage is the first project to reach the construction phase in Loma Linda University's current 10-year, $800-million capital improvement plan. Bomel Construction Co. is the general contractor for the $17.1-million, 464,000-square-foot structure. Construction began in October. International Parking Design, Sherman Oaks, Calif., is the architect for the design-build project. Construction of the garage will be finished at the end of 2013. Once completed, the new parking garage will have 1,171 stalls 6 Medical Construction & Design | January/February 2013 and allows the school to advance to its next phase of expansion: the construction of two multi-story patient towers. Skanska USA has been awarded an $80-million contract to construct a new Children's Pavilion at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. HKS Inc. serves as the project architect. The project will include the construction of a 640,000-square-foot building with exam rooms; a surgical area with operating and procedure rooms; areas for diagnostic testing, imaging and lab services; and faculty offices all dedicated to pediatrics. Included in the facility is an attached 600-space parking garage. The facility will be built behind the existing Children's Pavilion on the VCU Medical Center campus.
