First Word MCD MEDICA L CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN 8040 E. Morgan Trail, Ste. 23, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 phone: 480-361-6300 fax: 480-361-6394 Patient and visitor entertainment: There's an app for that About 13 years ago, I recall waiting anxiously for hours in the middle of the night for the birth of one of my dearest friend's sons. I crouched in the hallway with nothing to occupy me but my own thoughts: how was my friend doing? Are there any complications? Is he here, yet? How many pounds is he? Does he look more like my friend or her husband? And the list goes on. This was pre-smartphones so I didn't have the luxury of browsing the Internet, checking email, updating Facebook, Twitter, etc. Geesh…However did I manage? The hospital did not have adequate space for visitors — I recall there was one small (and crowded) visitor room with very uncomfortable seating. Hence the reason I chose to wait in the hallway. After many hours (I don't recall exactly how long she was in labor) her son was born healthy and happy. Although this is my experience at one hospital, many things have changed over the years. Hospitals now have ample room for visitors with comfortable seating, pullout sofas for overnight guests and entertainment to provide positive distractions for not only family and guests, but most importantly, the patients. Today, high-definition TVs mounted on the wall of a typical inpatient room feature integrated apps that allow patients to catch up on their favorite TV shows, rent movies, surf the web and much more. Hospital staff can pull up patient information such as X-rays and share educational videos related to the patient's condition. In addition, many hospitals are providing iPads to connect patients to the outside world with apps such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs or forums on their condition, as well as loading the device with games and movies, etc. Family and visitor zones provide much of the same amenities and also ample space for conducting business activities (checking email, faxing, etc.). Some areas include kitchenettes. In this issue of MCD, we spotlight patient entertainment in two articles. One provides an overview of all trends and developments in patient entertainment. The second article delves into the technology (signal distribution) that makes it all happen. Be sure to check them out. I hope you enjoy the first issue of 2013!
