Project News Montlake Tower opens at University of Washington Medical Center The Montlake Tower addition to the University of Washington Medical Center recently opened. The eightstory, $215-million expansion provides additional space for premature babies, cancer patients and the latest in radiological imaging technology. Oncology, radiology and a neonatal intensivecare units each will have a floor in the tower; two other floors will house computer-service functions and three floors are slated for future clinical use. Einstein Medical Center Montgomery opens hospital to the residents of central Montgomery County. The building — made up of 96 medical/surgical beds, a 22-bed intensive care unit, a 20-bed postpartum/antepartum unit and an eight-bed neonatal intensive care unit, as well as a two-story medical arts building — creates a dynamic expression of medical excellence while offering a caring and welcoming environment. Adding to this, nearly 30 acres of open space was preserved to create a complementary pastoral setting. Baylor McKinney opens with design for operational efficiency Baylor Medical Center at McKinney recently opened its doors and turned a page on patient room design. The facility's wedge-shaped patient rooms were designed by RTKL to satisfy Baylor Health Care System's desire for a new market hospital in fast-growing McKinney, Texas, located 30 miles north of Dallas. The medical center was built by MEDCO Construction. Through observation and research, RTKL's design approach was influenced by the combination of Baylor's mission and the desire for opera- 4 Medical Construction & Design | January/February 2013 tional efficiencies. The result is a 469,000-square-foot hospital with a uniquely curved bed tower and a 117,000-square-foot medical office building on the 52-acre campus. continued page 6 >> www.mcdmag.com MONTLAKE: BENJAMIN BENSCHNEIDER The tower is one of the most energy-efficient hospital additions in the Pacific Northwest, outperforming Seattle's energy code by approximately 30 percent and the national baseline code by an estimated 33 percent. It is among the first facilities to employ recommendations of a 2010 energy-reduction study by the UW's Integrated Design Lab and a consortium of architects, engineers and builders. Reduced power requirements brought by LED lighting, solar shading and other advantages are projected to save UWMC approximately $276,000 in annual energy costs. The tower was designed by NBBJ and built by Skanska USA. The project was funded by a mix of UW Medical Center cash and debt. Planning began in 2005 and construction started in 2007. Contractors completed the project on time and on budget. The new Einstein Medical Center Montgomery (Einstein Montgomery), designed by Perkins+Will, recently opened in East Norriton, Pa. Gilbane Building Company served as general contractor on the project. Sited adjacent to a 500-acre farm park, the facility is a result of Perkins+Will's intensive collaboration with its client, the Einstein Healthcare Network, to bring a technologically advanced, full-service, acute-care
