Project News Methodist Olive Branch Hospital celebrates grand opening Methodist Olive Branch Hospital in Olive Branch, Miss. has recently been completed. The facility was designed and constructed by an Integrated Project Delivery team including GS&P; , Smith Seckman Reid Inc. and Turner Construction Company. The new 210,000-square-foot, 100-bed hospital, which is on track for LEED Gold certification, features a sustainable setting with several energy-saving innovations. MOBH is the first hospital in the U.S. to use a dynamic, photoelectric glaze that can transition from clear to a variable tint at the touch of a button, Perkins+Will, Skanska complete University of Florida research building Perkins+Will recently completed the University of Florida's Clinical and Translational Research Building. The new fivestory, 120,000-square-foot facility, provides a headquarters for clinical and translational research for not only the UF Gainesville campus, but the state at large. The building houses the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the UF Institute on Aging, as well as several research groups. Skanska served as general contractor of the project. The CTRB's planning evolved through a series of informative workshops with the university's administration, representatives from the colleges that will use the facility and the extended design and construction team. The team sought to fulfill numerous goals for the building, including creating environments that propel innovative, interdisciplinary research and discoveries; interfacing with the community through education; developing a space that is adaptable, flexible and modular and providing a variety of indoor and outdoor interactive 6 Medical Construction & Design | November/December 2013 healing environments. Natural elements heavily influenced the building's design, especially the sustainability components. A prismlike glass curtainwall both reflects and refracts the area's copious sunlight. Roughly 8-12 percent of the building's electricity is produced by a solar photovoltaic system. Rainwater is collected to provide irrigation to the landscaping and to terrace planters. It is also used to flush the latrines throughout the facilities. Displacement ventilation systems help keep the building cool, while limiting the need for air conditioning. The building has been submitted for LEED Platinum certification. www.mcdmag.com UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA/ROBIN HILL bringing the total number of beds to 392 at build out. McCarthy Building Companies serves as the builder, with SmithGroupJJR as the designer. The lower level through fourth floor will be completely built out, and the fifth and sixth floors will be shelled for future build out as needed by the community. It is the first hospital structure in metro Phoenix to be built using concrete since the early 1980s. A second tower is anticipated to open in March 2014. In addition to the new tower, the construction plans also include the expansion and renovation of the hospital's emergency room, pharmacy, lab and culinary areas, as well as the central plant. The project also includes the construction of two additional parking structures, accommodating approximately 800 spaces for visitors and employees. The entire project is slated for completion in July 2015.
