Project News In brief Eastern Maine Medical Center recently broke ground on a 361,000-square-foot heart vascular center, surgical and inpatient building in Bangor, Maine. The $247-million modernization project was designed by MorrisSwitzer~Environments for Health. The project design included input from the community and caregivers with a special focus on creating an efficient and sustainable environment. The construction manager for the facility is a partnership between Cianbro and Brasfield & Gorrie. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016. enabling operators to instantaneously reduce glare and solar gain. The glaze was installed in the hospital's two-story lobby to minimize the energy needed to heat and cool the large atrium space. More than 200 geothermal heat pumps were installed throughout the building, including one in each patient room. The pumps take advantage of the earth's natural heat sink and use water to distribute heat throughout the facility — a strategy which is seven times more efficient than air at carrying heat. NICU renovations near completion for Omaha Children's Hospital Neonatal intensive care unit renovations are nearly complete at Children's Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. The new design by LEO A DALY will increase family privacy, provide more caregiver space in the patient rooms and streamline communication for staff. All phases of the renovations will be completed this fall. LEO A DALY is also working with Kurt Salmon Associates on the master plan for a future expansion of the hospital campus. To minimize the cost of the project, the design team kept the existing headwall layouts and designed around the basic infrastructure. Nurse work areas were relocated and grouped around a central support core that streamlines communication and still provides proximity to patient rooms. The interior design honors the original "bugs and insects" theme, but adds bright color accents to create distinction between rooms. Green and purple tones replace muted pastels to evoke a more positive, healing energy. The renovated NICU will support a new in-house program for high-risk deliveries, as well as other postsurgical and special-needs patients. A fetal care center under construction will include a delivery operating room, an infant resuscitation room and a recovery area for mothers. The NICU operates on two floors and is joined by a skywalk to Children's Hospital.
