Erdman wins DBIA Project of the Year award for Janesville Medical Campus To be eligible for the award, projects must have demonstrated successful application of design-build principles, including collaboration in the early stages of the project and the acceptance of single-entity risk. Winning projects are honored for advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery and unique solutions to project challenges. Waterford Health Park An artful corridor at Randall Children's Hospital. Generative Space awardees named The Waterford Health Park in Ireland and Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, Ore. were named winners of The CARITAS Project's Fourth Annual Generative Space Award. Both projects were honored recently during the annual Healthcare Facilities Symposium and Expo. Waterford Health Park is a multi-disciplinary medical facility. In 2009, the original historical structure was developed into a health park while conserving existing features. Space was created through the addition of new wings using sustainable technologies, taking advantage of solar energy and reusing captured rainwater. Judges noted the health park "shows evidence of a community beginning to flourish, supported by firsthand accounts of staff and patients." Judges added that "the historic design integration with contemporary use is exceptional." The 334,000-square-foot, nine-story Randall Children's Hospital consolidates pediatric services and creates a new identity for the children's hospital, as 10 Medical Construction & Design | November/December 2013 well as a new front door to the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus. This facility houses 165 inpatient beds in single rooms. It also includes a new pediatric emergency department. A new garden off the first floor lobby adds an open space to the well-established garden culture on the campus. A terrace garden on the third floor is designed to provide a variety of environments, including areas for play, conversation and contemplation. The hospital features two-story family lounges, a dedicated art studio and movie theater, teen center and workout facility. Judges said the connection of the children's hospital to the neighborhood, rather than just the campus, is outstanding. Additionally, judges note: "Interiors are carefully considered, with specific references to children and young adult needs allowed to surface, bringing individuality and life to the spaces. The inclusion of generous spaces for parents and caregivers is particularly well provided." For additional information, visit www.aplacetoflourish.net. www.mcdmag.com RANDALL CHILDREN'S/NICK MERRICK Erdman has won the Design-Build Institute of America's Project of the Year Award for the Great Lakes Region. The firm was honored for its work on the Janesville Medical Campus: St. Mary's Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic-Janesville East in Janesville, Wis. The project successfully integrated a hospital and clinic into one comprehensive facility, while creating a flexible framework for future growth. The integrated campus includes a 50-bed hospital, master planned to grow to 200 beds, along with a 150,000-square-foot clinic planned to double in size.
