The Innovation Institute launches Healthcare Design & Construction, LLC The Innovation Institute announced the launch of Healthcare Design & Construction, LLC, a design-build firm offering construction, architectural engineering and planning services to the national healthcare market. HDC was formed through the acquisition of PDC West, a construction firm based in Orange County, Calif., which has more than 25 years of healthcare construction experience, including acute care and outpatient medical diagnostic construction. PDC West was a subsidiary firm of PDC Facilities, Inc., based in Hartland, Wis. The leadership team consists of Scot Berlinski, president; Mike Hernandez, senior project director; Joseph De Luca Sr., project director and Jim Clifford, senior project manager. Survey finds increase in public restroom dissatisfaction A new national hand-washing survey reveals an increasing majority of Americans (63 percent) say they've had a particularly unpleasant experience in a public restroom due to the condition of the facilities. The national survey was conducted by manufacturer Bradley Corporation. The results are up from 51 percent one year ago. As for healthcare facilities, in particular, 65 percent of respondents say they have the highest level of germ concerns tied to hand washing — or lack thereof. In addition, almost three-fourths (73 percent) of survey respondents believe a bad restroom indicates poor management. Another two-thirds say an unsavory restroom lowers an opinion of the company or organization. The top restroom complaints were: a really bad smell (cited by 82 percent); toilets that were clogged or not flushed (79 percent) and an overall appearance that's dirty, unkempt or old (73 percent). Study contradicts belief that sustainable hospital design is too costly New research conducted by experts at Perkins+Will contests the commonly held belief that LEED certification for hospitals is cost prohibitive. The study, titled "LEED Certified Hospitals: Perspectives on Capital Cost Premiums and Operational Benefits," reveals that this is incorrect. Conducted by Robin Guenther, FAIA LEED AP Breeze Glazer, , LEED AP from Perkins+Will and Gail Vittori, LEED Fellow, from the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, the study is the first to focus solely on the capital cost premium for hospitals to achieve LEED certification. CAMA, Inc. honored for Princeton Healthcare Healing Arts Program Gordon Gund sculpture CAMA, Inc. has received a Collaboration of Design + Art, or CoD+A, merit healthcare award for its commission of a Gordon Gund sculpture for the Princeton HealthCare System Art for Healing Program.
