Completed in June 2014, some of the unique engineer- ing design features included enhanced fi l- tration for air handling units located near the hospital's helipad; an energy-ef cient radi- ant fl oor heating and cooling system for the lobby entrance and an entrance snow-melting system. Syska Hennessy de- signed state-of-the-art energy recovery and clean air systems for the ER. Patient rooms were designed with enhanced features that include multiple lighting controls; smart thermostat design for cooling/heating systems and an ease of maintenance that sup- ports infection control. When compared to a baseline model for a similar facility, the de- sign is 36 percent more energy ef cient. The project team included architect The S/L/A/M Collaborative and the Gilbane construction team. Perkins Eastman and Califor- nia healthcare design fi rm Lee, Burkhart, Liu (LBL Architects) have recently merged practices. The combined international fi rm totals 880 employees, stationed in San Francisco, California and will maintain and grow its practice in Los Angeles. WSP has acquired ccrd , a national MEP engineering and commission- ing fi rm. The acquisition enhances the fi rm's capabilities in health- care and science/technology. Established in 1980, ccrd has had a focus on providing engineering and energy solutions for complex facili- ties, such as healthcare facilities. Infection Control University has launched a patent-pending online learning center that provides infec- tion control awareness training certifi cation to all hospital and ven- dor employees. As a cloud-based learning center, ICU provides 24/7 access to information and proven techniques to reduce hospital ac- quired infections. For details, visit infectioncontroluniversity.com. Haskell has acquired Freeman- White . A major outgrowth of the partnership is a 360-degree service offering that fully aligns healthcare business strategy, operational performance, planning, design, engineering, construction and post-occupancy evaluation across the care continuum. FreemanWhite will continue to do business under its name and brand. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released a best practices guide to promote continuity of care before, during and after extreme weather events. This document identifi es the status of healthcare infrastructure's resil- ience to extreme weather risks, as well as best practices organizations can adopt to improve climate readi- ness. For details, visit http://toolkit. climate.gov. IN BRIEF IFMA Health Care Institute Accepted by International Healthcare Facilities Federation The Health Care Institute, an IFMA Alliance Partner, has been accepted as the United States "A" member by the International Federation of Hospital Engineering. IFHE facilitates the exchange of information and experience in healthcare facility design, construction, engineering, commissioning, maintenance and estate management. One organization per country whose constitution and objectives are similar to IFHE is allowed designation as an "A" member. For more information, visit http://hci.ifma.org. Beebe Healthcare Receives Award for Excellence in Facility Management Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware, is the 2014 recipient of the Excellence in Health Care Facility Management award from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering. The award, sponsored by Trane, recognizes an individual or facility management department that has implemented new or innovative programs or processes. The Environment of Care Committee at Beebe Healthcare worked to develop a comprehensive spreadsheet tool that tracked compliance information during environmental tours. The tool includes 53 questions and incorporates 2014 National Patient Safety Goals. CORRECTION In the November/December issue of MCD, JQ Infrastructure, LLC, was listed as the civil engineer for the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (project team list on page 25). This is incorrect. JQ (www.jqeng.com) provided civil engineering services for the project. We apologize for the error.
