level of pain, discomfort and anxiety.
Eskenazi's leadership and staf were
engaged to collaborate on lighting design
solutions that create a continuity of com-
fort. It entailed an exercise in examining
a "day in the life" of the medical facil-
ity, looking at the building like a living,
breathing entity — not a static structure.
Key spaces were studied during morning,
afternoon and evening hours to ensure
the lighting refl ected the key attributes of
the spaces. This included the main lobby,
waiting rooms and patient rooms.
Fully automated, the building responds
to the cycle of the sun — creating a dance between natural light
and artifi cial light, where one complements the other's illumi-
nation. In the morning, natural light dif uses though external
building façade louvers to help gently illuminate spaces. As the
day progresses and direct sunlight fades, dif used electric light
gently compensates automatically. In waiting rooms and patient
rooms, highly focused direct light beams create "cocoons of light"
for reading or quiet contemplation. In patient rooms, fl exible
lighting and control systems allow a patient to sleep in darkness
while a family member can read in the family zone.
