MCDM AG.COM | M A RCH /A PR IL 2015 | Medical Construction & Design 1 As I'm writing this letter, I'm looking at an email in the background, which talks about how two major healthcare systems are expand- ing on a previous merger — an expansion that's going from regional to national. The merger will result in a broader spectrum of ering of outpatient services. While mergers are not a new concept, it's interesting to see the implications on medical construction and design, such as improved and revised delivery methods, and more of an emphasis being placed on outpatient care. The boom in healthcare support facilities, which includes outpatient care facilities, urgent care centers, clinics in retail spaces, freestanding emergency departments and more, is being driv- en by a number of factors, including new models of care. Among driving factors are qualities that appeal to the patient, such as convenience. If I have a health scare, I fi nd comfort in knowing there's an urgent care center right around the corner from where I live. If I need a fl u shot, I like the fact that I can walk to a nearby drugstore and be in and out of said drugstore's "small clinic" within minutes. People live busy lives and seek out fast and convenient care. During a recent healthcare symposium hosted by Duke Realty that included industry thought leaders, and hospital and healthcare execu- tives, the topic of on-demand healthcare was discussed. Stuart Clark, senior director of The Advisory Board, a healthcare research and consulting fi rm, said more products and services (such as Netfl ix) are being of ered on demand, so consumers are expecting the same with healthcare. On-demand healthcare is defi ned as care with no appointment nec- essary, along with extended hours or services that are available 24/7. Clark said many healthcare systems are considering developing on- demand retail clinics. He said before doing so, however, they need to understand the market dynamics, where to locate the clinics and how to convert initial visits into long-term relationships and downstream revenue. This issue explores the many trends and driving factors of free- standing emergency departments, outpatient care facilities and urgent care centers. Read on to learn more. Enjoy the issue!
