MCDM AG.COM | M AY/ J U N E 2015 | Medical Construction & Design 1 About a year ago, a friend of mine asked if I heard of "dementia village," located near Amsterdam. The village is home to 152 dementia-suf ering seniors in a secure, 4-acre complex. Intrigued, I went on to read about how at this care facility — called Hogeweyk —activities are encour- aged for its residents such as grocery shopping, going to a barbershop, eating at a restaurant or simply visiting with friends. Residents can safely roam free, while care is provided by geriatric nurses and other caregivers dressed as villagers in street clothes. Planning for a simi- lar facility — the fi rst of its kind in the U.S. and modeled after this vil- lage — has begun. Mahal Cielo Village will be located in California. Designing facilities and providing healthcare tailored toward specifi c populations is nothing new. But with the availability of more technology and resources, today's spaces are better equipped to serve these patients. For example, Winter Park Memorial Hospital in Florida recently unveiled its senior emergency room. It is the fi rst of its kind in Cen- tral Florida. A dedicated section located within the hospital's main ED, the creation of this space couldn't come at a bet- ter time. The number of Americans 65 years and older are expected to skyrocket by 2030. The tim- ing is now to design for the aging population. The senior ER features staf with specialized training in geriatric emergency medicine. In addi- tion to the specialized training, the space includes amenities to help seniors feel more comfortable while seeking care. These amenities include magnify- ing glasses, hearing amplifi ers, large-print publica- tions and crossword puzzles and high-back chairs. Designing for mental health patients is also an ongoing evolution in population planning, with the goal of reducing stigma associated with mental illness and creating comfortable healing environments. In the United Kingdom, artist and activist James Leadbitter be- gan the Madlove project. The goal is to "bring together people with and without mental health experiences, to attempt to create a unique space where mutual care blossoms, stigma and discrimination are actively challenged, divisions understood, and madness can be ex- perienced in a less painful way." This issue of MCD focuses on best practices for design- ing for specifi c populations, such as the elderly, mental health pa- tients, military servicemen and women and those with disabili- ties.
