Throughout the years, we've heard countless tales of how advancing technology has made certain jobs obsolete. Devices we were attached to (cassette tapes, VCRs, etc.) have been forced into extinction to make way for new and improved electronics. It's even been pointed out in songs and other outlets. To be honest, it's not something I personally give much thought to. Recently, however, this point hit home when I cleared out some old boxes and discovered a mixed tape an old friend had made for me some 15 years ago. While I was delighted to fi nd this "lost treasure," my excitement was quickly squashed when I realized I didn't own a device to listen to it. Certainly I couldn't connect it to my iPod. On the other end of the spectrum, technology has also made our lives easier.
Each day we rely on technology in our day-to-day rou- tines. The moment I wake up, I turn on my cell phone and within minutes am checking emails, my schedule for the day and messages from various social networking sites. In terms of the industry, new technologies and methods are being developed and implemented in waves. For example, you may have read in our February e-News about how Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City created a unique iPad-style digital wayfi nding experience. The hospital combined state-of-the-art technology with traditional interior and exterior signage elements to help patients and visitors learn about the facility and navigate through the 1.2-million- square-foot hospital. Read more at www.mcdmag.com/ e-newsletter.
And in Canada, HDR is designing Humber River's new 1.7-million-square-foot hospital in Toronto. The facility will be the largest acute-care hospital in the greater Toronto area and the fi rst in North America to automate all of its opera- tional processes.
The developments are transforming not only methods, but entire healing environments to provide better patient care and healthier environments overall. Such technologies and processes include, but are not limited to: BIM, project- management software, Lean and various project-delivery methods. Articles on these topics are included in this issue, which I hope you'll enjoy.
