LEED Green news & practices The New Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas has achieved LEED Gold certifi cation from the U.S. Green Building Council. Surpassing the original goal of Silver, the Gold rating was earned by working closely with the HDR+Corgan design team and the BARA (Balfour Beatty, Austin Commercial, Russell and Azteca) construction team to design and build the hospital. One of the key design strategies in- volved siting the buildings between the existing Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail and bus transfer systems, making the complex readily accessible by public transportation. Vegetated space on the campus encompasses 425,000 square feet, with drought-tolerant vegetation that refl ects the Texas landscape. An ef cient irrigation system reduces irrigation use by 60 percent. Locally sourced stone and glass building materials were used, with 83 percent of construction waste diverted from the landfi ll. Other factors that helped the hospital earn LEED Gold include a 34 percent savings in energy use and a building that is orientated to ef ciently manage and control solar heat gain. Inside the hospital, the design allows natural light to shine in all of the private patient rooms, waiting areas and corridors. Inside lighting is adjusted using a low-volt- age lighting control system. The facility will reduce indoor water use by 31 percent. Children's South Receives LEED Certifi cation Children's South, the newest ambula- tory care center for Children's Hospi- tal of Pittsburgh of UPMC, has been designated a LEED-certifi ed location by the U.S. Green Building Council. Children's South, located on 2.6 acres in South Fayette, Pennsylvania, opened in September 2014 and includes more than 60,000 square feet of usable space. The location houses pediatric outpatient services, primary care and after-hours care in one highly visible, child- and fam- ily friendly and easily accessible building. The project team, which included IKM Incorporated and Rycon Construc- tion, Inc., was tasked with designing an environmentally responsible facil- ity. Strategies included credits for site development that maximize open space and manage storm water qual- ity, reducing building energy usage and implementing UPMC's recycling and non-smoking policies at the building.
