8 Medical Construction & Design | JA N UA RY/ F EBRUA RY 2016 | MCDM AG.COM Loudoun County's newest hospital —StoneSprings Hospital Center — recently opened its doors. Located in Dulles, Virginia, the new facility has been designed and equipped to provide comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, surgical and diagnostic medical care. StoneSprings comprises 124 beds, including 104 medical and surgical beds, 10 intensive care unit beds and 10 labor, delivery and postpartum recovery beds. The 234,000-square-foot facility also accommodates 15 emergency room bays (incorporating trauma), a cutting-edge cardiac catheterization lab/OR and state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and interventional equipment. In addition, the 51-acre site encompasses a 100,000-square-foot medical of ce building. Gresham, Smith & Partners served as architect and Brasfi eld & Gorrie LLC served as general contractor on the project. StoneSprings: Pepple Photography StoneSprings Hospital Opens Doors An expansion project at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, has doubled the capacity of its emergency room and its maternity department, among other elements, and is now complete. The $161-million expansion project in- cluded construction of a six-story patient tower, two multi-level parking garages, expanded ER and interior renovations to existing spaces. McCarthy Building Companies was the general contractor and SmithgroupJJR served as architect. The entire fi rst fl oor of the new tower is dedicated to supporting maternity services, including a 20-bed nursery built to neonatal intensive care standards, new postpar- tum rooms and labor and delivery rooms featuring soaking tubs for laboring patients. The fi rst fl oor also features a dedicated outdoor garden area. The second fl oor created a new space for cardiac catheter- ization labs, a special procedures room and dialysis unit and endoscopy suite. The third fl oor created 36 additional private rooms for general medical and surgery patients. The fourth fl oor provides an additional 36 rooms for maternity patients when patient demand warrants opening it. The fi fth and sixth fl oors have only their exterior walls complete, with no interior walls or fi nishes.
