MCDM AG.COM | JA N UA RY/ F EBRUA RY 2016 | Medical Construction & Design 1 We're well into the age of "smart." Every day we utilize our smart- phones, drive our smart cars while communicating with our integrated smart technology to pull up directions to our destinations and are able to control it all with our voices. While at home we watch our smart TVs and interact with our smart devices. But the term I recently came across that piqued my curiosity is smart antimicrobial coatings. According to the recently published research, "Markets for Smart Antimicrobial Coatings and Surfaces — 2015 to 2022," this market is expected to reach $500 million by 2022. But what exactly is a smart antimicrobial coating? Let's start by defi ning a smart coating. This term has recently emerged within the last decade, has varied defi nitions and is con- tinuing to evolve. Dr. Jamil Baghdachi, profes- sor, Polymers and Coatings graduate program coordinator, Eastern Michigan University, says "Materials that are capable of adapting their properties dynamically to an external stimulus are called responsive, or smart. The term 'smart coating' refers to the concept of coatings be- ing able to sense the environment and make an appropriate response to that stimulus" (Paint- ing & Coatings Industry — pcimag.com). This concept becomes ever more crucial in the healthcare environ- ment, with the ongoing battle against healthcare-acquired infections. Essentially, a smart antimicrobial coating features self-cleaning and self-healing functionalities. The ability to self-clean adds to the antimicrobial ef ect by washing away microbes; self-repair of cracks gives microbes no place to hide. The market for smart antimicrobial coatings and surfaces is driven by the need to se- lectively combat new threats from bacteria, viruses and fungi. The opportunity for antimicrobial surfaces extends well be- yond healthcare facilities. In fact, it's predicted — according to the aforementioned market report — that the next generation of antimi- crobial coatings and surfaces will be smart enough to kill harmful microbes while leaving the benefi cial ones, or will combine anti- microbial action with the ability to self-clean. Now that's smart! This issue of MCD puts the spotlight on healthcare surfaces, exploring design tactics to reduce the spread of infections. Beyond looking at surfaces, inside is an in-depth peek at how the industry has responded to the healthcare law.
