applications, case studies & best practices When WellStar Health System, a not-for-profi t leader in comprehensive care, planned its new WellStar Pediatric Center in Kennesaw, Georgia, it wanted to create a playful, wel- coming environment to help children and families feel relaxed and comfortable. Surface materials were selected that would realize this creative vision while also meeting the technical requirements needed in a healthcare environment such as durability, antimicrobial properties, the best indoor air quality and stain resistance. WellStar selected Gerfl or USA's Mipolam Symbioz. Not only did it meet the techni- cal requirements, the bright and fun color palette allowed the design team to create an engaging interior featuring a colorful aquatic theme throughout the facility that has proved captivating for both children and adults. "The one-fl oor building provides an en- vironment that's inviting for children," said Dr. Avril Beckford, chief pediatric of cer and WellStar board member. "Our vision for this center was that a parent could walk in and feel like they were completely at home. FLOORING It's fun and it's welcoming." The 20,000-square-foot interior — featuring Gerfl or USA's Mipolam Symbioz and Tarafl ex fl ooring — recently garnered architect CDH Partners the 2015 Vision Design Award for the year's best creative integration of fl ooring and architecture in the Healthcare category. Choice of fl ooring was key to the de- sign's success. Gerfl or USA products were selected because of the company's 60 years of experience in the healthcare sector, its advanced resilient fl oor technology and the design-forward reach of its product lines. Utilizing color-on-color in sweeping curves and arcs, the fl ooring dynamically supports the aquatic theme and also serves to intuitively guide pediatric patients through the facility. Mipolam Symbioz bio-based fl ooring from Gerfl or USA was chosen for corridors, examination rooms, medical scanning areas and laboratories. For the physiotherapy area, Gerfl or Tarafl ex Multi-Use 6.2 fl ooring was specifi ed for its sports properties such as shock absorption, impact protection and surface treatment, which allows for optimal levels of sliding, prevents skin burns and allows for easy maintenance. As the industry's only bio-based, homo- geneous sheet fl ooring, Symbioz utilizes a unique 100 percent plant-based phthalate- free plasticizer, which was singled out in a 2014 study by the Healthy Building Network for its superior environmental profi le. With 40 times lower VOC emissions than European environmental standards, Symbioz has a TVOC after 28 days of less than 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air. Limiting the spread of infections is vital for a pediatric healthcare facility. Symbioz — like all Mipolam healthcare fl ooring — is ISO 22196 certifi ed to limit the spread of infections (including MRSA, E. coli and S. aureus) at 99 percent. Durability and ease of maintenance were also important considerations. Symbioz has the best wear resistance for high-traf c ar- eas and a no-wax-for-life surface treatment, which provide for a healthy lifecycle. The revolutionary, micro-structured cross-coat polyurethane Evercare surface treatment forms a 100 percent nonporous barrier that resists a broad spectrum of chemicals com- monly found in healthcare environments. Matching Symbioz's advanced techni- cal features is its beautiful design aesthetic. The line of ers designers a wide palette of 26 non-directional, tone-on-tone colors — 11 bright colors and 15 neutrals — all with an attractive matte fi nish. "Our aim is to give architects and design- ers the perfect combination of technical performance and modern designs for creat- ing interiors that enhance the healthcare experience for patients and families," said Jim Bistolas, Gerfl or USA national health- care segment director.
