Submissions Sought for 2016 Generative Space Award Guide Released on Clinic Design Strategies for an Era of Change Modern Clinic Design: Strate- gies for an Era of Change, written by Christine Guzzo Vickery, CID, EDAC and Gary Nyberg, RA, was recently published. The book explores all aspects of clinic design, and describes how aesthet- ics and functionality can merge to provide a positive experience for patients, staff and healthcare providers. The comprehensive guide addresses the impacts of evolving legislation, changing technologies and emerging nontraditional clinic models on clinic design, and illus- trates effective design strate- gies for any type of clinic. Readers will fi nd innovative ideas about Lean design, design for fl exibility and the use of mock-ups to prototype space plans. Diagrammed examples that include waiting rooms, registration desks and exam rooms demonstrate how these ideas are ap- plied to real-world projects. Balanced Healthcare Construction Starts Reported for Spring FOR MORE DETAILS, VISIT CMDGROUP.COM CMD announced that March's level of U.S. construction starts, excluding residential work, was $28.5 billion, a sharp climb of 18.0 versus February. That's considerably better than the usual or long-term average February-to-March change of +2.5 percent. Noteworthy with this report has been a signifi cant upward revision in February's starts, from $19.1 billion to $24.1 billion. Among type-of-structure categories, the biggest adjustments occurred in parking garages, private offi ce buildings and hospitals/clinics. In addition, one hospital is among CMD's list of the 10 largest project starts in the U.S. for March 2016. The Washington Adventist Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland is valued at $331 million and roughly 600,000 square feet. More than 50 percent of the institutional category so far this year has consisted of school/college starts, which were decently strong at over 48.7 percent month to month, over 15.1 percent year to year and over 6.5 percent year to date. On balance were hospital/clinic starts: +24.4% m/m; +91.0% y/y and +34.2% ytd.
