Comprehensive pediatric care moves to the 'burbs
The lobby incorporates the brand's signature blue, playful seating
and whimsical butterfl y inspired art.
The building represents a unique identity for St. Louis Children's
Hospital while still incorporating elements from the main campus,
such as the iconic blue band.
Colorful entry portals and consistent iconography for each clinic
aid in wayfi nding and create a sense of place.
Even under the most benign circumstances,
seeking out pediatric medical services can
be a stress-inducing event for both children
and their parents. Feelings of uncertainty and
anxiety regarding the visit can be compounded
by the need to navigate through a complex
hospital campus in a dense urban setting.
St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington
University Physicians aimed to mitigate these con-
cerns with their jointly owned St. Louis Children's
Specialty Care Center — one of a few standalone,
comprehensive outpatient facilities in the U.S.
focused exclusively on patients up to the age of 21.
Located 12 miles from the hospital's main campus
in Missouri's western St. Louis County, the center's
design is informed by immersive user research and
creates a soothing patient journey, while redefi ning
accessibility and convenience for pediatric services
within the community at large.
