All of these concepts are just a few that are critical to the healing journey. All of these are rooted in healthcare projects throughout the U.S. All of these can also be seen in projects around the world. Situated in London, The new Cancer Centre at Guy's Hospital designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Stantec, is de- signed on a human scale, bringing in natural elements and embracing patients and visitors in a non-institutional setting. Six linear accelerators — radiotherapy machines — are treating patients above ground level, with a goal to help patients feel more comfortable in natural light and air. "Patients didn't want to feel like they were being sent down to the dungeon, so now when they wait for treatment, they will get good views, be able to walk onto the balcony and, most importantly, see daylight," said Catherine Zeliotis, Stantec's clinical design lead for the Cancer Centre. While many projects around the world are all facing the need to update and modernize aged facilities in order to at- tract consumers and, in some cases, medical tourists, fi nd- ing innovative ways to deliver these projects can be tricky. In Germany, HDR|TMK, JSWD Architects, Sander Hofrichter Architects and TSJ Architects, are working on a modernization project for the University Klinikum of Schleswig-Holstein's Kiel and Lübeck campuses. The project, which follows a public-private partnership delivery model, is the largest PPP project to ever be undertaken in Germany. When complete in 2021, both campuses will feature a cohesive design language and iconic facilities that will push healthcare, research and innovation to new heights. Read more about trends driving healthcare projects in Germany in the pages that follow. Access to nature, designing for community wellness and delivery methods, such as public-private partnerships, will continue to be driv- ing forces behind healthcare projects. Although some projects may be miles (or kilometers) apart, it's refreshing that goals are aligned. This issue of MCD explores various projects around the globe, taking a deeper look at trends and lessons learned. Enjoy the issue!
