The desire to provide patients with seating options that make them more comfortable has given rise to new product lines that also provide aesthetic variety, ease of maintenance and fl exibility in how furnishings can be arranged. Furniture manufacturers are develop- ing collections that incorporate unique components, such as a lounge-style chair, sofa or settee, guest chair, bariatric seat- ing and often a hip chair. This breadth of line gives designers options for creating a cohesive look while providing a variety of seating arrangements and clusters throughout a facility. Modern interpretations of classic resi- dential furniture pieces, such as a rocking chair or a wing-back chair, add a whole new level of comfort and familiarity to the healthcare environment. Rocking chairs off er the added ability to move one's body, which can be especially calming to an anxious patient or family member. Another way to vary seating choices for patients and family members is to incorporate tables. Small café-style tables and chairs and high bar tables with stools provide a place to enjoy a cup of coff ee or work on a laptop in an environment that resembles a café, rather than a typical waiting room. Durable, easy-to-maintain woodgrain plastic laminates have become so realistic that adding these wood laminate options is a great way to add warmth and a sense of richness to any space. The eff ective use of space is always a consideration. Adaptable furniture for exam rooms and patient rooms provide the ability to save space and leverage mul- tiple uses. Options include exam chairs that convert to a fl at table confi guration that can then be raised and lowered easily by the care provider, as well as patient room guest chairs that recline fl at for an overnight visitor. Furniture, upholstery play important role in disease control A serious consideration for furniture and textile manufacturers is disease control. Antimicrobials have been part of healthcare upholstery products for many years and are available on some furniture. However, much research is still being done on antimicrobials and their effi cacy. One major health system, fi nding no proof that antimicrobials off er any enhanced protection from the spread of bacteria and germs, now bans the use of 15 antimicrobials from their built environments. These chemical additives pose potential risks to the environment, air quality and the health of those exposed to the chemicals. The Healthier Hospitals Initiative, a collaborative eff ort between leading healthcare providers and NGO's; Practice Greenhealth and Health Care Without Harm developed an information guide to help reduce the environmental footprint of healthcare facilities. In another move, a group of U.S. hospital systems have pledged to reduce purchases of furnishings and furniture treated with antimicrobials as part of an interiors goal supported by Practice Immediately upon entering the UCSF Cardiovascular Care & Prevention Center, Golden Gate Practice, the receptionist is visible, welcoming and ready to assist. The clinic promotes a sophisticated, rich and comforting atmosphere through the use of natural wood tones, subtle pattern and texture, thoughtful lighting and options for seating.
