ennis M E D I C A L C O N S T R U C T I O N D E S I G N MCDM AG.COM | M AY/ J U N E 2017 | Medical Construction & Design 1 As I write this letter, I sit in my offi ce with the lights off and blinds open — taking full advantage of the invigorating ben- efi ts of natural light. Since doing this, I've noticed a clear diff er- ence in not only my productivity level, but also my general mood. I encouraged my co-workers to open their blinds as well. It's not a new topic, however, recent studies such as the "Impact of Workplace Daylight Exposure on Sleep, Physical Activity, and Quality of Life," published by the Interdepartmental Neuroscience program at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, suggest that benefi ts of access to natural light in the workforce go beyond productivity. Researchers concluded there is a strong relationship between workplace daylight exposure and offi ce workers' sleep, activity and even quality of life. Although this study focused on offi ce workers, ongoing research, along with proof from putting these concepts into practice, has shown similar results in healthcare workers. In fact, in this issue of MCD, we explore in-depth the relationship between light and both staff and patient well-being. Learn more in our spotlight section. And, while it plays an important role, lighting is just a small part of the relationship between health and interiors as a whole. A few months ago, more than 30 interior design professionals met during the International Interior Design Association's 20 th annual industry roundtable to discuss the state of the industry and what's next. This resulted in a report and, included in the content covered, were insights where roundtable participants were asked, "Where do you see the interior design profession in 5 or 10 years?" Answers touched on a variety of commercial interiors, but the connection between healthy interiors and human health was clear. This is especially apparent in healthcare. In particular, Jeff Fenwick, vice president, board of directors, International Interior Design Association and president and chief operating offi cer of Tarkett North America, said, "Interior design [and its impact on] determining staffi ng and work strategies will become increasingly important to end-use clients in other vertical markets — especially healthcare, where the work environment is seen as a contributor to better patient care" (IIDA Industry Roundtable, 2017 Report). Inside this issue, we put healthcare interiors under the microscope and examine various topics surrounding this focus. Read on to learn more. Enjoy the issue!
