8 Medical Construction & Design | NOV EMBER / DECEMBER 2017 | MCDM AG.COM Construction was recently completed for Phoenix Chil- dren's Hospital's new emer- gency department and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, which is the only American College of Surgeons-verifi ed Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in Arizona and one of a few in the United States. The new center has the capacity to accommodate 100,000 patients each year. The original ED was designed to treat 22,000 annually, but more than 83,000 patients were treated at the facility last year alone, making it one of the busiest centers in the country. The design allows for future expansion and, with Arizona's pediatric population expected to grow to 1.5 million by 2030, the new space is anticipated to meet the demand of Arizona's children now and in the future. Designed by Hobbs + Black Architects, the center is located directly below the helipad, decreasing the distance to transfer a patient to a trauma bay to 215 feet in less than 90 seconds (the prior time was almost fi ve minutes). Kitch- ell was able to build parts of the center at its new Kapture Group prefabrication facility in Tempe, Arizona, including exterior wall panels and 58 pa- tient headwalls complete with framing and ready for medi- cal gas and electrical ports. Architecture gives physical form to UCHealth's brand identity at new Longs Peak Hospital The new UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont, Colorado provides advanced care and a high-quality patient experience close to home for the region's residents. The project team includes EYP Health, Haselden Construction, Affi liated Engineers Inc., Datum Engineers, Gallun Snow, BHA Design, Inc., JVA Consulting Engineers and Project One Integrated Services. The new 210,000-square- foot hospital provides more than 50 inpatient beds and room to expand to more than 100. The hospital is designed to provide a combination of services, physical design and brand image that make patients and family feel that the hospital is theirs. The exterior palette of materials speaks to the Mountain West locale where residents hold a deep connec- tion to the outdoors. Colorado Buff stone, brick and wood give the building a native materiality that grounds the structure. High-performance glass in the building envelope supports energy effi ciency, while off ering views out and natural daylight into patient and staff areas to promote health and healing. Regional stone and natural woods carry into the interior of the building to maintain consistency while the strategic application of accent colors ease wayfi nd- ing. The use of warm, natural wood at key touchpoints reinforces a human con- nection. The sum of the interior design elements creates a "chic" lodge environ- ment, easily identifi able and adaptable for other facilities. UCHealth is pursuing a Silver LEED for Healthcare rating. Longs Peak: Jim Roof Creative DESIGNING FOR CARE Construction Finishes for Phoenix Children's Hospital's New ED, Trauma Center Projects completed & upcoming Final Beam Placed for Surgical Tower Addition at Mount Sinai Medical Center A topping-out ceremony was recently held for the 154-bed surgical tower addition at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Florida. Construction began in August 2016 to ad- dress the expanding healthcare needs of both Miami and Miami Beach residents and visitors. The 340,000-square-foot expan- sion will bring a new surgical tower and emergency department to the main campus. The new emergency department spans 35,000 square feet across 50 treatment bays and essentially triples the size of the current facility to accommodate up to 75,000 annual patient visits. Equipped with 154 private rooms, including larger VIP suites and 12 large contemporary operat- ing rooms, the new patient tower offers striking views of nearby Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline. The project also includes a new public lobby, revised vehicular traffi c patterns and new parking space. The architect for the new facility is CannonDesign, and is being constructed by Robins & Morton with construction management by ADAMS. Construction is targeted for completion in fall 2018.
