52 Medical Construction & Design | May/June 2014 www.mcdmag.com S pectrum Health System is a not-for-profi t, integrated, managed healthcare system created in 1997 and originally comprised of the two largest hospitals in Grand Rapids, Butterworth and Blodgett. Through a series of mergers and acquisi- tions, Spectrum Health is comprised of nine hospitals of varying sizes through- out western Michigan. Dating back to 1873, Butterworth Hospital is one of four facilities that make up Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spectrum Health Medical Center. Over the last cen- tury, Spectrum has grown into a regional leader in care, diagnostics, treatment, prevention and education. While updated over the years, the Butterworth women's healthcare services were on numerous fl oors and buildings. In order to better serve patients, the hospital needed to consolidate these services in one location within its center tower. To help achieve this cohesively, they retained Kalamazoo, Mich.-based TowerPinkster Architects and Engineers. TowerPinkster worked closely with the Spectrum Health team to provide a design that met all of the architec- tural needs, while also adhering to the mother/baby philosophy of offering care that supports bonding and gives parents and newborns the best possible start for infant feeding. Additionally, postpartum rooms needed to accommodate babies staying in the room should the mother choose to practice skin-to-skin bonding. The obstetrics triage now includes 12 exam rooms on Level A in the facil- ity's center tower. The area is accessed through the Women's Center entrance and serves expectant mothers requir- ing immediate medical care. Twelve exam rooms and four ultrasound rooms surround a central nurse station, allow- ing patients to be easily monitored at all times. Floors seven and eight were completely gutted, renovated and con- solidated into two, 20-bed inpatient units on each fl oor. The center tower is a cast-in-place concrete structure that challenged the design team to add the required number of patient rooms on the exterior perim- eter and the center core infrastructure. Spectrum Health is aware of the con- nection between the environment and human health. Its mission to improve the health of the communities served includes a commitment to sustainability efforts — meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future gen- erations to meet their needs. The focus of Spectrum's sustainability commitment is to improve human health, protect the natural environment and practice fi scal responsibility. To that end, the renovation included all LED luminaires. Previous to the renovation, incan- descent and fl uorescent fi xtures from the 1990s were installed. Lentz Becraft, LEED P.E., electrical engineer with Tow- erPinkster, made dramatic improvements to the lighting because he knows how impactful it can be in a space. Additionally, the strong relationship between Spectrum Health and Tower- Pinkster fostered ongoing lighting tech- nology discussions and also secured the decision to install all LED luminaires. This decision allowed for using far fewer fi x- tures than with traditional lights, virtually eliminating maintenance and dramatically reducing energy costs and consumption. "Kenall Lighting's MedMaster, CleanScene, Envela and downlights in the patient rooms and the renovated fl oors' common areas provide con- tinuous light levels, are cutting-edge technology and are also a perfect fi t with Spectrum's sustainability objectives," said Becraft. In total, 115 Kenall Lighting LED luminaires were installed in patient rooms and common areas on fl oors seven and eight. Today's healthcare luminaires must provide effective illumination while simul- taneously addressing stringent infection control standards, EMI interference and strict cleaning protocols. The LED lumi- naires installed throughout this renova- tion meet these requirements. For more information, visit www.kenall.com.
