MCDM AG.COM | JA N UA RY/ F EBRUA RY 2015 | Medical Construction & Design 1 While out and about on a daily basis, I hear many sneezes, coughs, and bear witness to runny noses, watery eyes and a variety of symptoms related to the common cold and strands of the fl u. It's just not possible, nor would I want, to be confi ned to my house. So I rely on my own methods of infection control. In other words, lots of hand-washing, get- ting the fl u shot every year and a few daily doses of vitamin C and zinc. Regardless of being my own, personal methods or a hospital's proto- cols and standards, infection control is an ongoing top priority. Infection control is — and always will be — more than a buzzword. And of course when it comes to healthcare facilities, it's imperative in preventing healthcare-acquired infections. Transference of the cold and fl u in public places such as restaurants, of ces, parks and retail stores is commonplace and the risk is known, but nobody wants to walk into a doctor's of ce or hospital and walk out with a new or more serious illness or infection. The truth is, according to the Of ce of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, roughly 1 in every 25 inpatients has an infection related to hospital care. There are a variety of causes, including: > Use of indwelling medical devices such as bloodstream, endotracheal and urinary catheters > Surgical procedures > Injections > Overuse or improper use of antibiotics These common causes of HAIs are not obviously correlated to design or construction, however design and facilities considerations — including sanitation, air quality and materials usage — can have a substantial impact on HAIs' prevelance. Peruse the pages of our infection control section to fi nd a spread of news and the latest developments on current infection control technologies and methods, along with top design considerations for biocontainment units. According to the latest data provided in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's HAI Progress Report, signifi cant reductions were reported at the national level in 2013 for nearly all infections. Proper infection control measures will assist in ensuring this decline continues. Happy New Year and be well!
