10 Medical Construction & Design | SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER 2015 | MCDM AG.COM Accommodating Improvement Completed Multi-Phased Expansion at Reston Hospital Center — Gresham, Smith and Partners recently completed a $40-million, multi-phased expansion at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Virginia. The projects are part of the hospital's master plan aimed at improving healthcare services provided to the residents of western Fairfax and eastern Loudoun counties, just outside of Washington, D.C. The expansion includes a 180,000-square-foot, LEED Silver medical office building, additional operating rooms, larger pre-operation and surgical-recovery departments, new imaging space and a new main entrance lobby. The MOB was built by Whiting-Turner; all other expansion components were built by Skanska. The new lobby is open, airy and connected to nature in a variety of ways: wood accents, natural light and custom vinyl graphics featuring several types of trees. Windows in the pre-op rooms provide relief from the sterile atmosphere. Art was incorpo- rated throughout the space and provided by local artists. Projects Outpatient Pediatric Facility Features Advanced Technology, Dedicated Spaces Of cials from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia recently opened doors to the new Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care. Located across from the main hospital, the center is a major part of the newly named Raymond G. Perelman Campus, and an enduring symbol of the institution's 160th year. Making the medical experience fun for children, while ef cient and conve- nient for families, was at the center of planning for the new facility. Spacious waiting rooms are fi lled with natural light and dotted with "Wait, Play, Learn" areas to provide patients and their siblings a venue for educational toys and games. Clinical areas are co-located for ef cient travel and advanced electronic systems will reduce wait times for ap- pointments and expedite registration and checkout, while fully integrated electronic health records will bring the facility closer to a paperless system. A 14,000-square-foot roof garden will af ord space for recreation, as well as rehabilitation sessions, while a 2.6-acre landscaped outdoor plaza will of er a safe open area for play, entertain- ment and emotional recharging. Easily distinguishable from the neighboring buildings, the facility is 12 stories high with a curving façade boasting pri- mary colors and a glass-lined exterior admitting abundant natural light. UW Health at The American Center Focuses on Prevention, High-Quality Care The new UW Health at The American Center in Madison, Wisconsin emphasizes both prevention and high- quality medical care as essential compo- nents of good health. The center was designed by Flad Architects and built by J.H. Findorf and Sons. The cross-functional facility, encom- passing nearly 500,000 square feet, has three sections: a hospital, clinics and an area devoted to wellness. It also features advanced telehealth capabilities, allowing patients to be seen remotely by specialists. The American Center includes 14 operating rooms; 56 inpatient rooms; the fi rst demonstration kitchen in a Madi- son hospital (used for community cook- ing classes and to teach patients); a yoga studio and sports performance facilities, such as a replica Kohl Center basketball court, a swimming pool, an indoor track and both indoor and outdoor turf fi elds. In addition to a 24/7/365 emergency department with signifi cant ambulatory capabilities, inpatient and outpatient services will focus on orthopedics, urol- ogy, general surgery and bariatrics. completed & upcoming Buerger: Ed Cunicelli STATS: LAND PARCEL: 42 ACRES > PARKING RAMP CAPACITY: 270 vehicles > SURFACE LOT CAPACITY: 870 vehicles > CONCRETE: 31,846 cubic tons > TONS OF STEEL: 1,200 > LANDSCAPING: 828 trees, 2,738 shrubs, 8,684 perennials > GLASS SURFACE AREA: 66,000 SQ FT > GALLONS OF PAINT: 7,000 > DIRT/GRAVEL MOVED: 350,000 cubic yards
