16 Medical Construction & Design | SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER 2015 | MCDM AG.COM news, awards, etc. Industry AWARDS Mayo Clinic Health Facility Touted 'Best in Brick' The Mayo Clinic Health Facility in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, was among nine Best in Class winners of the 2015 Brick in Architecture Awards. The Brick Industry Association's awards honor outstanding, innovative and sustainable architec- ture that incorporates clay brick products as the predominant exterior building or paving material. Serving a largely farming region in a city that has evolved into an exurban community, the $28-million replacement hospital project more than tripled the healthcare facility's size, to 80,000 square feet with 15 beds and a 36-exam room primary and specialty care clinic. Brick gives the facility a sense of permanence and stature sited on a 51-acre wooded site. RTKL, Mobil Arquitectos Receive International Honors for Clinic Expansion RTKL and Mobil Arquitectos were recently recognized for design of Clinica Las Condes Phase 1 Expansion Project, winner of the Design & Health International Academy Awards 2015 in the Health, over 40,000-Square- Meters category. The awards recognize professional excellence in the research and practice of designing healthy built environments. Af liated with Johns Hop- kins Medicine International and accredited by the Joint Commission, RTKL and Mobil Arquitectos' primary objec- tive with CLC was to create a holistic, patient-centered expe- rience in the urban district of Las Condes in Santiago, Chile. Redefi ning the existing campus, the 125,000-square- meter facility incorporates advanced technologies and hotel-like environments with plazas, gardens, water fea- tures, hospitality-style fi nishes and furniture, artwork and light-fi lled spaces. By utilizing sustainability practices such as energy recovery, parametric energy modeling and lifecycle cost analysis, the project funda- mentally improves the ef cien- cy of the hospital and creates a new paradigm for the region. Tones of tan and beige of the entry façade are set against a main palette of red brick for the central core. Earth-tone brick colors are picked up inside the facility to give patients and staf a warm and comfortable environment for receiving and delivering care. MLK: HDR/Emily Hagopian; Las Condes: Nico Saieh HDR Honored by Los Angeles Business Council for Design of Martin Luther King Outpatient Center HDR, as executive architect on the Martin Luther King Jr. Outpatient Center project, was recognized at the 45th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards during a gala luncheon hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council. A model for culturally sensi- tive healthcare, the facility is a Design-Build collaboration with HMC Architects and McCarthy Building Companies. Part of a transformative and phased county program to upgrade existing facilities on the 38-acre MLK Medical Center campus in Los Angeles, California, the new 132,550-square-foot LEED Gold-designed outpatient facility houses an ambulatory surgery center, fi ve operating rooms, dentistry, oncology, women's services and physical and occupational therapy ser- vices. Utilizing a whole-person approach to patient care, the safe and accessible outpatient center refl ects the bright new vision for the medical "village."
