14 Medical Construction & Design | NOV EMBER / DECEMBER 2015 | MCDM AG.COM Industry news, awards, etc. A project by Iowa State University design students has won in the student category of the 2015 Healthcare Environment Awards. The awards honor healthcare interior architecture and design across a range of project types. The students took fi rst place for their conceptual design of a second patient tower at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The students devel- oped the winning "UIHC Tower 2" proposal as their capstone project in the College of Design's spring 2015 Health, Healing and Wellness interdisciplinary option studio. A 12-story tower designed by Sir Norman Foster that will house the new children's hospital is under construction on the UIHC campus. Students were tasked with designing a second tower that would complement the project and address complex site challenges. The winning design features a twisting form that enhances views from patient rooms, aids in circulation and creates a softened environment to assist in healing. The team will be recognized during the Healthcare Design Conference, Nov. 14-17, in Washington, D.C. For details, visit news.iastate.edu. Artist Dale Chihuly will bring his vibrant works of art to patients, families and staf at the Fred & Pamela Buf ett Cancer Center when it opens in the spring of 2017. While Chihuly's artwork can be found in a number of hospitals across the country, this will be one of the largest installations he has created within a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Chihuly, a pioneer of the studio glass movement, will create an installation known as the Chihuly Sanctuary inside the facility. With a background in architecture, Chihuly has always had a keen interest in space and light. This project was of particular interest to the artist because of the healing and meditative aspect his artwork could bring to patients and families. Made possible by a gift from Suzanne and Walter Scott, the Chihuly Sanctuary will be a cornerstone of the Healing Arts Program. When complete it will have five distinct spaces, each with artwork created specifically for that space.
