MCDM AG.COM | NOV EMBER / DECEMBER 2015 | Medical Construction & Design 1 Picture this: A day fi lled with getting bloodwork, visiting a primary care physician, consulting a specialist, doing a little shopping and then fi lling required prescriptions. Sounds like a typical day, right? Now imagine doing that all in one facility. This future is getting closer to reality, with facilities such as the one featured on our cover: Northwestern Medicine's outpatient pavilion — 259 East Erie. A true one-stop-shop for residents of Chicago, Illinois, the new 25-story building of ers patient services, physician of ces and even a little retail therapy. Learn more details about this project in the following pages. As the focus continues on collaboration, convenience and enhancing the patient experience, it's likely more of these facilities will take shape in the future. In addition, there are several more themes painting a picture of the facility of the future: Advancing technology. A focus on urban healthcare. Evolving healthcare models. And some of these trends were discussed in-depth during the recent InterFace Healthcare Real Estate Southwest conference in Dallas, Texas. Keith Konkoli, executive vice president of healthcare for Duke Realty, who spoke at the conference, said developers must adapt to the changing needs of healthcare clients. "That might mean expanding beyond a developer's traditional focus on MOBs to include freestanding emergency departments, specialty outpatient centers and even post-acute facilities — whatever the client needs to achieve its strategic objectives," Konkoli said. Overall, conference panelists agreed that in the past few years, there has been a rise in new outpatient facilities, specialty clinics and health and wellness centers. Two main reasons for this growth are a recovering economy and providers are more confi dently adapting to changes brought forth by the healthcare law. The bottom line? Design should aim to accomplish a number of goals, including increasing throughput, reducing costs, increasing physician and staf collaboration, improving the quality of care and enhancing the overall patient experience. This issue of MCD closely examines the trends of today that are shaping tomorrow's healthcare facilities. Read on to learn more.
