MCDM AG.COM | M AY/ J U N E 2016 | Medical Construction & Design 1 As I child, I remember one of my favorite toys was a viewfi nder. It brought me into the world of kaleidoscopes and wondrous places far away. It was a way to go somewhere without really going anywhere. Oh how that technology has evolved! Imagine its successor of sorts being used in the industry. Healthcare projects may soon get a boost in productivity, and it's all thanks to a new virtual tool in development that streamlines the collab- orative design process. NBBJ recently announced a new business partnership with startup Visual Vocal to incubate and develop a virtual reality productivity plat- form. The new tool will allow distributed project stakeholders to immerse themselves into unbuilt environments and provide instantaneous feed- back to inform a collaborative design process. The intent of the tool, according to an NBBJ spokesperson, is to make design feedback and decisions more ef ective, enjoyable and inclusive. Of particular importance to healthcare clients, it will also help save time and money, requiring fewer in-person meetings and not require busy executives and other stakeholders to always need to be in the same place at the same time in order to provide feedback, the spokesperson added. The fi rm is in talks to deploy the VR tool on several of its healthcare projects. Visual Vocal will launch the beta version of its platform as an NBBJ exclusive later in 2016, and the fi rm will pilot the software on not only healthcare projects, but also corporate and urban planning clients. Ultimately the tool will then become available to the greater architecture, engineering and construction industry. This virtual tool certainly allows a holistic view of the overall unbuilt environment — taking everything from fl ooring to fi nishes and providing a sneak peek at how it all comes together. We will keep you posted on this and other developing technologies as they arise. In the meantime, this issue focuses on holistic design — from pediatric care to eliciting feedback to better serve patient populations, along with staf — to holistic ambulatory retrofi ts. It's all right here. We also put the spotlight on fl ooring. Be well and enjoy the issue! —Michelle Tenniselle Tennis Michelle Tennis, Managing Editor Virtual View New tool being developed to boost project productivity EDITORIAL PURPOSE: Medical Construction & Design (MCD) ISSN 2155-823X provides the reader with insights and information related to the healthcare construction and design industry.
