When the Order of St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois undertook a 440,000-square- foot expansion, it faced a major facility challenge — bringing the Children's Hospital of Illinois under the same roof with the existing medical center. The hospital looked to the architects and Cannon Design's dedicated healthcare interiors team to shape a patient experience that was clear, friendly and caring — from wayfi nding to the right fi nishes. In keeping with its commitment to bringing smart design choices that solve client challenges, the team used color as an integral element to the overall design. So when it came time to choose fl ooring, the team looked for products that were not only suited to the needs of healthcare environments, but that also brought the right color options. Chosen for this project was BioSpec MD, homogenous sheet fl ooring with a through- chip construction that stands up to demanding foot and roller traf c. Available in 72 colors, it features Quantum Guard HP, Mannington's patented urethane wearlayer with aluminum oxide, cured by an ultraviolet process — the highest performance urethane fi nish in the industry. The wearlayer provides exceptional wear resistance, stain resistance and lowers maintenance costs. The no polish, no buf ng maintenance option is well-suited for healthcare environments. BioSpec's wearlayer also includes MCare, an anti- microbial element that inhibits a wide range of bacteria and mold growth, reducing exposure to liability from infection. "We thought BioSpec MD was a good fi t because of the wide color range the product of ers," said Jocelyn M. Stroupe, principal at Cannon Design. "We were designing spaces for adults, as well as pediatrics… the range of ered was extensive and allowed us to create a very color-rich environment." Also selected for the project was Realities, heterogeneous fl ooring also with a Quantum Guard HP fi nish that features classic beauty and modern sophistication together in a collection that inspires creativity, while of ering superior performance. Inside and out, the Children's Hospital of Illinois is catered to the needs of its pediatric patients and visitors. Flooring and fi nishes cohesively add to this healing environment.
