8 Medical Construction & Design | M A RCH /A PR IL 2017 | MCDM AG.COM The expansion and renovation of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod in Sandwich, Massachusetts has been completed. The project consisted of a two-story, 6,230-square-foot addition and 12,800-square-foot renovation of space in the existing 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital. The expansion ad- dresses space constraints, enhancing accessibility and preparing the hospital to meet projected demand for outpatient services. Spaulding's goal for the project was to enhance the patient experience through improvements to the inpatient and outpatient environments. The project team collaborated with hospital staff throughout the design process to incorporate workfl ow enhancements. The hospital's Pa- tient Family Advisory Council, as well as mobility-impaired patients, provided suggestions for improving the comfort and accessibility of the spaces. The project team included Margulies Perruzzi Archi- tects and Columbia Construction Company. New Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center improves patient experience The new Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center in Ohio recently began welcoming patients. The 377,000-square- foot facility, estimated at $276 million, will house all outpa- tient cancer treatment services in one location with the center's team of medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, nurses, genetic counselors, social workers and others all working together in one shared space to improve patient outcomes. Designed by William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc. and Stantec Architecture and built by Turner Construction, the new seven-story building was designed with patient experi- ence and empathy in mind, drawing on feedback from a panel of former cancer patients who outlined what would make their experience as ideal, wel- coming and healing as possible. The new building is orga- nized by cancer type, allowing patients to have all of their ap- pointments in one area where clinical caregivers come to the patient. For example, all clinical and treatment areas for breast cancer are located together on the same fl oor off ering greater convenience for patients. The new cancer center was designed to create a healing environment by the use of natu- ral light throughout the entire facility. A new 350-foot-long canopy at the build- ing's entrance will provide a more convenient and welcoming arrival process for patients. Roughly 2,000 construction employees logged more than 1 million hours on the project. During construction, a special recognition wall was installed for workers to place ribbons inscribed with the names of loved ones aff ected by cancer using colored ribbons to denote the type of cancer, such as dark blue for colon cancer and white for lung cancer. Located in an area where tradespeople passed daily, this wall helped serve as a reminder of the new facility's purpose, and will be preserved as a permanent art piece in the new building. Spaulding: Warren Patterson; Akron: akronchildrens.org DESIGNED FOR COLLABORATION Construction was recently completed on the Akron Children's Hospital inpatient pediatric behavioral health unit, adding 10 beds to the existing 14 and remodeling rooms to make them private and better suited for patient care. Located in Ohio, the project team included Summit Construction and TC Architects. The expanded number of beds, and the fact that they are single rooms, gives the staff more fl exibility in accepting patients regard- less of gender. This will reduce the need to divert and transfer patients to other facilities in the region. The expan- sion will allow the hospital to treat an addi- tional 500 patients in 2017, increasing to 750 patients by 2020 for a total of 1,750 annually. The unit will also accommodate growth in educa- tional opportunities and training for medical students and adult psychiatry residents from Northeast Ohio Medical University.
