10 Medical Construction & Design | M A RCH /A PR IL 2017 | MCDM AG.COM Jefferson Healthcare Facility Serves as New Front Door, Anchor Point The new 52,900-square-foot Jefferson Healthcare Emergency and Specialty Ser- vices Building in Port Townsend, Washington serves as the new front door of the hospital campus. It contains many support services for the hospital and serves as the internal and external anchor point for patient wayfi nding, parking and general circulation. The addi- tion is designed to provide adequate physi- cal facilities, improved patient fl ow and more proximate diagnostic services for emergency room, primary care and orthopedic patients. The image of the building is designed to subtly rebrand Jefferson with a prominent, modern fa- cility replacing an aging former laundry building and virtually hidden pedestrian access point. Sedum plants growing on the roof can be seen from the top fl oors; the hospital's dietary teams will be using herbs grown in a raised bed for meals. The project team included architect CollinsWoerman and general contractor Aldrich + Associates, Inc. In addition, exposure to nature is promoted through its siting along an existing lake and the design of a wheelchair-accessible healing garden. The project team for the 50,000-square-foot facility included Perkins+Will and Howard Shockey & Sons. The two-story, glass-and-wood entry to the center is augmented with a green plant wall and a prominent staircase. The light-filled waiting area connects the entry to the healing garden. Natural views abound from multiple vantage points. Sustainable materials were used throughout and natural materials, such as wood, were featured as much as possible. As part of planning, a new glass skywalk connects to the existing diagnostic center. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Breaks Ground on Center for Advanced Pediatrics Children's Healthcare of Atlanta recently broke ground on the Center for Advanced Pediatrics — a new pediatric ambulatory care center. The projected 260,000-square- foot facility situated in Brookhaven, Georgia, will bring together pedi- atric clinics and specialists under one roof. The center will house 457 physicians and employees and anticipates managing more than 100,000 patient visits in the fi rst year. In addition to physician space, the new facility will have telemedicine capabilities, fl exible exam rooms, a teaching classroom and a dem- onstration kitchen to enhance spe- cifi c clinical programs. Additional features of the site include gardens and green space around the build- ing and a dedicated parking deck. With an anticipated opening of summer 2018, the project team includes Brasfi eld & Gorrie (general contractor), HKS (architect), Stan- ley Beaman & Sears (interior design) and HGOR (landscape architect).
