54 Medical Construction & Design | M A RCH /A PR IL 2017 | MCDM AG.COM Report Shows Strong Progress in Environmental Performance Among Nation's Leading Hospitals Practice Greenhealth recently released its eighth annual Sustainability Benchmark Report. The report analyzes data from leading hospitals and health systems across the country, giving a snapshot of trends in environmental performance and sustain- ability in energy, water, toxics, food and other categories. Amongst key fi ndings, the report revealed that more hospitals are relying on renewable energy — the percentage of facilities that generate or purchase renew- able energy has increased by 81 percent. In addition, overall, hospitals recycled 121,556 tons of material saving nearly $23.7 million dollars. Also, 30 percent of reporting hospi- tals indicated they have programs in place to purchase furniture or furnishings that avoid chemicals of concern. Learn more at practicegreenhealth.org. North Coast Health Center's 265 kilowatt roof-top installation in California is now operational, providing more than 452,000 kW hours of energy annually to the facility. The installation will provide 75 percent of the facility's common energy needs and save $3.5 million in energy costs over the life of the system. The project was built and developed by Borrego Solar. North Coast is the largest outpatient health center in North County, San Diego. A capital lease structure was utilized to pay for a portion of the installa- tion. Based on EPA estimates, the new system will off set the environmental equivalent of removing 36,000 gallons of gasoline consumed annually or 338,000 pounds of coal burned annually. CATCHING SOME RAYS 256 Kilowatt Roof-Top Solar Installation Unveiled at San Diego Outpatient Center North Coast: Borrego Solar NSF 342 Included in LEED v4 Pilot Credit The U.S. Green Building Council has cited wallcoverings certifi ed to the NSF/ ANSI 342 Sustainability Assessment for Wallcovering Products as eligible for credits under LEED v4. Certifi ed products qualify for a possible one point under the Pilot Credit entitled Certifi ed Multi-attribute Products and Materials. Wallcoverings covered by NSF/ANSI 342 include textiles, vinyl, vinyl coated, alternative polymer, alternative polymer coated, paper and natural fi ber prod- ucts. The standard evaluates criteria across the product lifecycle, from raw material extraction through manufac- turing, distribution, use and end-of-life management. Unique to this standard is the requirement that both manufacturer and distributor qualify in order for the product to carry the certifi cation. Learn more at wallcoverings.org. Toolkit Provides Energy Benchmarking Help A new toolkit can help facility profession- als benchmark energy use and implement low- and no-cost projects to help improve energy effi ciency. The Energy to Care toolkit — an interactive PDF — is available at energytocare.com for a free download. The toolkit includes frequently asked questions about the Energy to Care benchmarking and awards program, video tutorials on optimizing energy dashboards and step- by-step instructions on effi ciency projects.
