MCDM AG.COM | M A RCH /A PR IL 2017 | Medical Construction & Design 59 Northside Hospital is one of Georgia's largest and most respected healthcare delivery systems, with three full-service hospitals in Atlanta, Cherokee County and Forsyth County and more than 150 outpa- tient service locations across the state. And its service to the people in the area keeps growing. A three-story vertical expansion to the existing fi ve-story tower at its Forsyth County facility in Cumming, Georgia was recently completed. Northside Facility Services worked closely with its local Sherwin-Williams team to determine the best coatings for all phases of the project. Sherwin-Williams Paint Shield micro- bicidal paint was selected to be an integral part of the interior coatings spec. Featuring quality coating performance, great hide and durability, Paint Shield is available in 550 colors and comes in the popular eg-shel fi nish. The paint was used throughout the entire seventh fl oor of the new addition — an area designed to serve as an oncology bed unit. "The microbicidal properties were at- tractive given the compromised immune system of our patient population for this fl oor," says Tom Doenitz, engineering manager at Northside Hospital. Paint Shield is the fi rst EPA-registered microbicidal paint and kills greater than 99.9 percent of staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, vancomycin-resistant enterococcus faecalis and enterobacter aerogenes within two hours of exposure on the painted surface. It continues to kill 90 percent of these bacteria even after repeated contamination for up to four years when the integrity of the surface is maintained. The patented technology in Paint Shield represents the culmination of extensive research and collaboration between Sherwin-Williams coatings sci- entists and expert microbiologists. "Paint Shield is a game-changer in the coatings industry and represents a major breakthrough in technology," said Steve Revnew, senior vice president of product innovation, Sherwin-Williams. "Importantly, it not only helps prevent the spread of these harmful bacteria on the painted surface, but it also features all the appearance and qualities our custom- ers seek and expect from Sherwin-Williams." In addition to its micro- bicidal properties, another benefi t of the paint is ease of installation. DACA Specialty Services was contracted to apply the paint. DACA painters brushed and rolled two coats of Paint Shield on the walls of the new oncol- ogy bed unit, and one of the best parts was that it was easy to apply and presented no signifi cant learning curves for the crew. "This product did exactly what Sherwin-Williams said it was going to do," says Ken Gibson of DACA. "My biggest concern going in was about touch-up, but Paint Shield feathers out extremely well. It doesn't fl ash like some eggshell paints do, and it has great coverage. Our guys really liked it, and I'd compare it to Sherwin-Williams' Cashmere paint in its application." All in all, the use of Paint Shield micro- bicidal paint has been a positive ex- perience for everyone involved in the project. "We have noted our use of it to patients, visitors and to accreditation surveyors," Doenitz says. "We look forward to monitoring its performance over time both in terms of durability and reduction of bio load in the space." Visit swpaintshield.com.
