38 Medical Construction & Design | SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER 2017 | MCDM AG.COM Innovative healthcare institutions are discovering the potential operational and fi nancial benefi ts of participating in a microgrid, a discrete district energ y system consisting of distributed energ y sources and loads capable of operating either in parallel with, or independently from, the main power grid. These include the assurance of uninterrupted service to patients and other building occupants, avoidance of lost revenue during grid outage and reduction in energ y costs as a result of the effi ciency of combined heat and power. A new microgrid energ y facility under design development in Bronx, New York — the East Bronx Healthcare Microgrid — is designed to maintain reliable thermal and electric operations for Weiler Hospital (Montefi ore), Jacobi Hospital (NYC Health & Hospitals Corporation) and Calvary Hospital and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The project includes CHP, solar, battery systems, steam turbine generators and heat recovery steam generators. The project will also leverage the existing steam generation plants at the four institutions. The EBHM will generate an estimated $87.2 million in net benefi ts (present value 2014$) over the project lifecycle for the participants. Moreover, the microgrid will facilitate their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by off setting an estimated annual 77,241,207 pounds of CO2.
