ennis M E D I C A L C O N S T R U C T I O N D E S I G N MCDM AG.COM | SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER 2017 | Medical Construction & Design 1 When I set out to plan this issue, I had a tough time fi nding new in- formation/development/updates on green standards. But that doesn't mean nothing new is happening in the realm of sustainability. Here's what I discovered: While many organizations (certifi cation, healthcare, etc.) have been doing a fantastic job on their own with feats in conservation and sustainability measures, a little teamwork can also go a long way. There's been a trend of partnerships driv- ing new healthcare building projects, but partnerships are also stirring new develop- ments in streamlining sustainability goals. Take, for example, unifi cation between the International WELL Building Institute and the U.S. Green Building Council. Just to recap, IWBI introduced its WELL Building Standard in 2014. WELL is a ho- listic building standard designed to create healthy indoor spaces across seven cat- egories of building performance and human impact: air, water, nourishment, light, fi tness, comfort and mind. The USGBC and IWBI have been working together and have identifi ed specifi c credits where submitted documentation will be recognized by Green Business Certifi cation, Inc., the certifying body for both LEED and WELL. This alignment saves project teams time and costs and reduces documentation. A document was recently published that outlines various levels of fulfi llment within each certifi cation system for overlapping credits and features of LEED and WELL. The document also indicates when and where additional measures may be necessary in order to receive certifi ca- tion from the complementary programs. Learn more at wellcertifi ed.com. Moving beyond certifi cations, there's plenty happening in the world of sustainability within medical construction & design. This includes more uses of dynamic glass to save on utilities, while bringing in natural light. Partnerships have also spurred development of microgrids for reliable and effi cient power in hospitals. Learn about these green trends and more in our "State of Sustainability" focus.
