ennis M E D I C A L C O N S T R U C T I O N D E S I G N MCDM AG.COM | NOV EMBER / DECEMBER 2017 | Medical Construction & Design 1 It was a Google headline that caught my eye — "Meet the researcher using Google Street View to help dementia patients with memory loss." What a wonderful use of technology, I thought and had to read more. The article was about a stationary bike that pairs Google Street View to take dementia patients on a virtual ride down memory lane. Technology that was once someone's vision has become — or is becoming reality. And it's transforming the delivery of care. An- other example is virtual realty being tested in a hospital in Cali- fornia to treat chronic pain. As it turns out — more hospitals are utilizing VR to test patient outcomes. Technology is just one as- pect that serves as inspiration for the facility of the future. On the facility front, it wasn't long ago that the fi rst fully digital hospital in North America was unveiled. The Humber River Hospital in Toronto, Ontario features au- tomated routine processes. For example, robots deliver non-narcotic drugs and other supplies; diagnostic images are charted immediately and patients check in on self- serve kiosks that will automate patient records and notify the relevant care teams that the patient has arrived. Today more digital hospitals are in the works. Offi cials at UPMC/University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences recently announced a $2-billion investment to build three digi- tally based specialty hospitals backed by translational science. "We are also pleased to announce that Microsoft will collaborate with UPMC in designing these 'digital hospitals of the future.' Building on our existing research collaboration with Microsoft and its Azure cloud platform, we will apply technology in ways that will transform what today is often a disjointed and needlessly complex experience for patients and clinicians," said Jeff rey A. Romoff , president and CEO, UPMC. At the intersection of technology in the built environment and tech- nology transforming delivery of care is telemedicine. Telemedicine is changing the face of delivery of care, but isn't without its challenges. Among challenges is how best to design facilities to accommodate tele- medicine technology. That question is answered, along with others in this issue of MCD, which focuses on the future of healthcare. A future I believe we are ready for and will take us into next year and beyond. With that said, since this is our last issue of 2017 — see you next year!
