The solar array will be the largest on any hospital in the state of Washington and will help off set the energy costs of the medical center. McKinstry, a Design-Build fi rm, managed the project. The solar array was installed by A&R; Solar. Grants from Seattle City Light's Green Up program and the Department of Commerce helped fund the project. Seattle City Light's Green Up program, which provides funding for local renewable energy programs and projects, awarded Harborview $50,000. The Department of Commerce's Energy Effi ciency Grant Program helps state and local agencies pay for energy-effi ciency upgrades and solar installations, and awarded Harborview an additional $47,000. Harborview's Solar Array Largest Among Washington State Hospitals Large projects, baby boomers give boost to healthcare starts In 2017, healthcare starts have fi nally exceeded the 68-76 million square foot range they have been tethered to over the past seven years. Thanks to several large hospital projects, healthcare construction is expected to gain 7 percent to 81 million square feet accompanied by a 5 percent gain to $27.2 billion. During the fi rst nine months of 2017, there were 36 healthcare projects valued at $100 million or more that broke ground, led by such projects as the $1.4-billion Penn Medicine Patient Pavilion in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a $550-million medical center in St. Louis, Missouri and the $465-million Marcus Tower at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Despite 2017's gain — assumed to be the result of pent-up demand after years of depressed activity — a great deal of uncertainty remains for this sector. Continued uncertainty is expected to cause healthcare starts to remain little changed in 2018, with starts slipping 1 percent to 80 million square feet while the dollar amount rises 2 percent to $27.8 million. Still, longer-run growth potential remains for the healthcare market. Nearly 28 percent of the U.S. population is over the age of 55 and that proportion will only grow as the large baby boom generation continues to age.
