ennis M E D I C A L C O N S T R U C T I O N D E S I G N MCDM AG.COM | JA N UA RY/ F EBRUA RY 2018 | Medical Construction & Design 1 I've heard for the last few years how hot a topic outpatient care is and how it has been an attractive option for building for a number of reasons, including population health and overall cost of building, etc. We cover an infl ux of various types of new outpatient facilities in our project news each issue. It's a trend that will grow and certainly continue to evolve. It's such a popular topic that we decided — when planning MCD's 2018 editorial — to kick off the year diving deep and exploring outpatient care facility trends. So, needless to say, I was surprised to come across the recent Revista article, "Construction Slowing – Outpatient Deliveries Down 15% from 2016" (read the full article by Hilda Martin at mobscene.revistamed.com). The article revealed: "After follow- ing up on all projects scheduled to start in 2017, only 14.9 million square feet actually broke ground — 2.5 million less than what started in 2016. The rest has been pushed into 2018 or is not moving forward … What these fi gures also show is confi rmation of a downward trend. We're showing three consecutive years with a decrease in starts ..." So what is causing decline or delays? Two things, according to the article: an uncertain healthcare climate and mergers. But despite what the numbers show, many are not seeing a slowdown in outpatient facility projects. According to Jason Signor, CEO of developer Caddis, "Although the overall trend may be slowing, from our [Caddis'] perspective as a third-party developer, there has been a signifi cant uptick in activity in the last two years." MCD editorial board member and an HKS Principal and Senior Vice President Joe Sprague, FAIA, FACHA, FHFI, said that although mergers do aff ect outpatient facility new builds, he hasn't seen much of a slowdown in activity. "I am seeing an increase in new construction and plans to build new outpatient facilities, including a variety of ambulatory care facilities and medical offi ce buildings," Sprague said. "I believe hospitals and health systems are in part doing this because it is a cost-eff ective way to deliver and provide access to healthcare to the populations they serve." Stay tuned as we continue to watch this trend.
