LED lighting, when imple- mented thoughtfully, can have a powerful eff ect on how hospital staff , visitors and patients per- ceive their environment. What hospital administrators and facility managers must under- stand is that LEDs have diff er- ent shapes, confi gurations and functions than the fl uorescent lamp and that is just the unit itself, not to mention the count- less variation, which comes with creativity. It allows them to transform physical spaces in ways that normal fl uorescent bulbs simply cannot. If that isn't enough to sway facility manag- ers, the cost savings of LED lighting can provide a facility with enormous savings over a given period. There is, of course, the positive environmental impact, which comes with the elimination of mercury found in fl uorescent lamps. So LED makes good design sense and allows for unlimited creative so- lutions for enhancing the health, performance and experience of all visitors. The following are four in- novative lighting design trends transforming the healthcare environment. 1. Sun tracking Hospitals are notorious for having poor sleep environ- ments. Frequent disruptions from light and sound can upset the natural circadian rhythm, slowing healing and discharge time. Hospital operational staff is actively doing their best to decrease the sound disrup- tions that are not design driven; beeping from the machines, the hourly check-ins from the nursing staff and the buzzing of alarms and pagers. Current technologies are striving to mitigate these issues. However, as a designer, it is important to provide facilities with solutions to address the lighting portion of this problem. Programmed LED lighting systems can imitate the sun's natural passage throughout the day, mimicking morning light to noon daylight to the setting sun on into night. When nighttime comes, the LED system can signal that it is time to sleep. Lighting systems such as these assist in regulating the patient's circadian rhythms, which is important for the physiological process of healing. Similarly, this type of light tracking aids healthcare workers, whose circadian rhythms are thrown off by night and overnight shifts in addition to the long workday under artifi cial bulbs. 2. Wayfi nding with "balance beams" Low-light hours at night to enhance the circadian sleep rhythm can make it diffi cult for staff and patients to move safely in their rooms and in hallways.
