The use of large LED backlighting or singular sources of light at reception stations can transform them into "beacons" and focal points of interest. 4. Patient room personalization Due to its programmability, akin to but better than fi ber optics, LED has the abil- ity to have continually changing light de- pending on the desired use. For example, LED settings can manage the whole color and chroma of a patient room. If a child comes into a room and her favorite color is orange, the whole room or just a wall can be changed to orange for a given period of time (or even the entire patient stay), then changed back to a more moderate color without using a drop of paint. This personalization allows the patient to feel comfortable during their stay, promoting a positive infl uence on the patient experi- ence. There's no doubt that lighting technol- ogy will continue to evolve. If the auto industry is any indication, the next great innovation could be light emitted by laser diodes. Some car manufacturers are already using laser lighting for headlights. As architects and designers approach new projects, it's important to bring new ideas to the table and push beyond what is known or familiar. In the case of LED lighting, as we see greater adoption and more creative utilization, the understand- ing of its benefi ts for patients and staff will continue to grow. Slips and falls are a major source of injury in hospitals and can result in enormous additional expense. The use of this wall-mounted rail- ing, fi tted with under-side LEDs that illuminate a path when touched, enables patients to fi nd their way in low-light hours. It also provides support and extra visibility of the patient for the attending nurses and physicians. 3. Enhanced aesthetics In addition to better function, the use of LED can lend an artistic element throughout a hospital and can impact the way people perceive spaces and even the quality of care in some studies. Lighting is a critical component to create healing environments for patients, as well as a positive work environment for the staff experience. LED lights can be utilized to display large-scale images and logos, which can further incorporate a hospital's brand- ing throughout a facility. In addition to providing a high-design environment, using programmed lighting instead of traditional signage can be more economi- cal and easier to update, again providing further cost savings. Large LED backlight panels can be used on the walls or ceiling of an imaging department to provide a pleasant distraction for patients as they encounter the high-stress setting of an MRI or X-ray machine.
