landscaping and responding to the scale, fabric and context of the neighborhood. The approach is designed to be empathetic to visitors and staff with clear wayfi nd- ing from the street to front door with an emphasis on transparency as expressed through its ultra-clear glazing. Enhancing user experience Functionally, the building envelope was designed to reduce the impact on heating, cooling and lighting. Aesthetically, the de- sign team utilized parametric modeling to produce a randomized pattern for striated terra cotta panels, to create a soft dappling appearance of an ever-changing building skin based upon the time of day as it cap- tures the natural play of sun and shadow confi gurations from sunrise to sunset. Once inside, the clear sightlines aff ord- ed throughout the building let the visitor know their pathway through the building will be intuitive, manageable and stress- free. For example, just beyond the clearly visible points of greeting and welcome is the immediate placement of registration, check-in and waiting. Creating a vibrant environment to elevate the overall patient experience and enhance workplace wellness for its staff was a primary goal. To that end, the design team created two 3-story open air court- yards that fl ood the gallery space with natural light and provide visual access to the outdoors. The visual connection to nature is repeated throughout the patient's journey within the building. The open monumental stair in the atrium is the focal point of the space. The Wellness Stair, with views to interior courtyards and a locally designed and fab- ricated art glass feature suspended from the ceiling above, transforms itself from a simple connecting core element into that of a memorable experience. Culminating the Wellness Stair experi- ence and at the top of the third fl oor, is the common waiting area shared by OB-GYN and Pediatric Care Clinics, which fea- tures an interactive wall for children to play with while they wait. The comfort- able seating for adults and parents with the positive distraction of the interactive wall serves to reduce stress and introduce fun elements into pediatric care. Upon return from treatment, patients can see the courtyard light through each clinic's translucent glass doors. This provides a consistent design language of connectivity to the outside world, as well as an intuitive wayfi nding strategy for the building. Standardized clinic modules were laid out for fl exibility and the team integrated workplace strategies to promote produc- tivity, collaboration and wellness. Clinics are organized into standard modules that are interconnected. The standardization of rooms and the connectivity between clinic modules allow for fl exibility within the clinic space, making schedule load leveling seamless. The team performed a Lean Six Sigma project by analyzing the current state of the clinics. The new model reduces the large walking distance discrepancies between care teams by 91 percent and reduces overall walking distances by 36 percent. When compared to the existing practices, the collaborative model of care reduces the space requirements of the combined physician practice by an aver- age of 6 percent, saving the system about $641,000 in construction cost. As part of an ongoing eff ort to continu- ously employ research to both inform and enhance design, the team performed a design diagnostic. This diagnostic is a systematic current state analysis that studies the relationship between facility design, human experience and organi- zational effi ciency to inform future state design. The study involves a method using online surveys, onsite observations and interviews and off site spatial analysis us- ing parametric tools. Reported, observed and spatial data are analyzed together to understand the patterns that emerge. The complete study has been published as part of the HKS Idea Fellowship.
