The facility, built by Tocci Building Companies and designed by S/L/A/M Collaborative, is the fi rst healthcare project completed in New England using Integrated Project Delivery. The development had a total cost of $12.7 million and included a new 14,000-square- foot cancer treatment wing. To prevent any unintended radiation exposure, a vault with 6-foot-thick concrete walls and a 4.5 ton steel door was built to house the linear accelerator. Advanced BIM techniques were used to coordi- nate the specialized mechanical and electrical systems to service the linear accelerator vault. Infection Control Concept Highlighted at International Ebola Crisis Summit In response to the ongoing Ebola Crisis in West Africa, a panel of healthcare providers, government agencies and aid organizations gathered recently at "Digital Aid: Lessons Learned from the Ebola Crisis" in Washington, D.C. The panel dis- cussed lessons learned from the outbreak in an effort to advance tactics in the fi elds of infectious disease and disaster response. Mark Smith, M.D., chief innovation offi cer with MedStar Health, presented the HKS-developed exit room concept, initially presented at the October 2014 American College of Emergency Physicians conference "ED Talks." The concept promotes a unidirectional fl ow strategy with an exit room on the backside of the isolation room with clean to less clean fl ow processes until full doffi ng and decontamination is possible. This scheme eliminates hazardous backtracking of contamination. Book Explores Approaching Capital Projects Capital Projects and Healthcare Reform: Navigat- ing Design and Delivery in an Era of Disruption, was recent- ly published. Edited by Rob- ert Levine and Georgeann Burns, the book takes readers through the logical steps of approaching capital projects in light of the ACA and the new environment where the delivery model must be based on value rather than volume. The editors, experts in healthcare real estate construc- tion, strategy and design, provide an overview of the new fi nancial landscape for capital projects, identify what the future will hold for such projects, and share guidance for successfully navigating this new envi- ronment. A unique feature of the book is the attention paid to the various par- ticipants and perspectives involved throughout capital projects, including health- care executives, architects, planners, construction and project managers, and more.
