The winners are: NEW CONSTRUCTION Baystate Medical Center Hospital of the Future, Springfi eld, Massachusetts Project Team: Steffi an Bradley Architects, Suffolk Construction, LeMessurier Consultants, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin and Vanderweil Engineers Baystate Medical Center's recent 630,000-square-foot campus expansion boasts an inpatient bed replacement, adult and pediatric emergency department and trauma center, a heart and vascular center, surgery expansion, private patient rooms and new parking facilities. The design facilitates multidisciplinary care with a clear separation of public and patient fl ow from staf and supply movement. RENOVATION Mercy Hospital St. Louis 2nd Floor Women's Health Center, St. Louis, Missouri Project Team: Archimages Inc., McCarthy Building Companies This project involved the design and construction of an entirely new infrastruc- ture and unit layout within the original 1962 building. Three wings on the second fl oor of a seven-story patient tower were gutted for the project, while Lean design concepts were analyzed and instituted for the new unit. Despite unexpected plumb- ing issues and other speed bumps along the way, fl exible work schedules, daily com- munication and coordination among all team members kept the project on track. INFRASTRUCTURE South Georgia Medical Center Power Plant Replacement, Valdosta, Georgia Project Team: Valdosta Electric, Cauthon Construction, Valdosta Mechanical and Gresham, Smith and Partners The center's original power plant from the 1950s was recently replaced with a modern plant designed to provide emergency power for the SGMC Main Campus, as well as the new Dasher Memorial Heart Center and Patient Tower. The new power plant houses 42 miles of cables and conduit. When the power plant's large diesel generators are fi red up, the system uses 180 gallons of diesel fuel per hour to operate key systems within the hospital. ASHE Vista Awards Winners Announced Baystate Medical Center Baystate: Baystate Health Donor Recognition Installation Unveiled at UCSF Medical Center The new UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay in San Francisco has unveiled an installation that combines donor recognition with education, entertainment and placemaking. The medical center, working with digital media consultant Sensory Interactive, created the installation as an expression of gratitude to the donors who have contributed nearly $600 million for the construction of its new $1.5-billion children's, women's and cancer hospital complex. As the centerpiece of the instal- lation, a 4' by 13' interactive wall, features a gesture-controlled "attract mode" that captures the attention of visitors walking past the installation. Visitors can use the wall's touch- screen capabilities to learn more about donors and also explore engaging content about the institution's hos- pitals, faculty, staff and programs. The wall accommodates mul- tiple simultaneous users along its 13-foot length. The full installation includes two non-interactive LCD displays across the corridor from the interactive wall, a variety of static graphic panels and a custom audio environment, giving the installation an immersive, museum-like feel.
